Is It Age or IT: First Steps toward Understanding the Net Generation.
Oblinger, D. & Oblinger, J. (2005)
In this article, the author states that the home access to technology is not uniform across population. I think within a few years time, almost every home will have a computer with internet access, just like every home has got a TV now. I think the Net generation spend hours together with digital media, are not wasting their time. They are actually learning a lot of information may be superficially, developing many skills, like social skills, team work, collaborating, peer to peer learning, sharing and interacting, by involving in online communities, showing others what they can do and also voicing their opinions. I think they are much better than the older generations. Outside the classroom, they learn many things with their self motivation, experiential learning and exploring which enables them to retain information and use it in creative meaningful ways.
Based on my experience, I learnt a lot from watching TV, through surfing the net, and participating in online communities. The Net generation learners are more visually literate. We all know a picture speaks thousand words. I prefer the Net generation way of learning through images than older generations’ text-based learning. I think it takes much less time to understand through the images and also to retain the content when compared to text-only environment.
